May You Make Your Movie – May 25, 2021 – A trip on the train

Work trip? No problem. Grab your camera and take a few shots. Here be a collection of clips from my journey from the streets of Beijing to the city of Zhengzhou.

Originally I was going to do this video in black and white, similar to the good ol’ black and white movies when trains were still the most common method of travel. But, once I sat down to edit the footage, I realized that I had not set the GoPro to HyperSmooth so all of my walking shots look like, well, walking shots. A bit jolting to say the least.

A little change of plans so I kept the colour, shortened the edits quite a bit, no extra sound effects and no appearance of the author or the camera.

I did my best to blank out the faces of the license plates but the people on the train proved to be a little bit more tricky. Possibly with more time I could get it to work better.

No effects at all just walk and record. This is a typical work trip I take on the train compressed into about five minutes. Visually, I think it’s interesting to see how it all comes together and, if I can disclose a little secret, I’ve often shot similar images with the idea to “some day” make a video about my trip. So I finally did it.

The location list is as follows:

  • Streets of Shuangjing
  • Line 7 subway
  • Beijing West Station
  • Outside Beijing West Station
  • At the base of escalators leading up to waiting rooms

  • Inside second class (blue seats)
  • Sunset leaving Beijing

  • Just outside of Shijiazhuang
