November 2, 2014: Settling in

Where has the year gone? It’s cliche and you’re probably tired of hearing it but it’s hard to believe that it’s already November 2014. But it’s only been the last few months that have gone by really quickly as the first part of the year seemed to drag on. It was something about being back in Winnipeg and just not quite sure if I wanted to or was going to stay. In the end, I decided to go to China.

July saw me visit New York and extend my stay in Ottawa. August was Montreal. September was Toronto and, finally, China.

I’ve noticed I’ve slowed down quite a bit when it comes to travelling, much to the dismay of others who think or believe that it’s either no problem or that I love to pack up all of my stuff and move one town over. To be honest, it’s gotten tedious, repetitive and kind of boring. As a result, I find myself less willing to simply pack up and go. I suppose I measure my steps a little more these days, especially when packing is involved. To be honest, I’d almost rather stay at “home” (wherever that is) and read or write. In some sense and way, my wanderlust has been satiated. The desire to flit about from here to there with no real purpose has all but come to an end. It’s as if I need to catch up with myself and all that I’ve done over the last few years.

And so I’m now in China and I’ll be here for the foreseeable future. I have my tickets paid for so it’s likely I’ll be back in Canada in short order. I’ve also read that North Korea has shut it’s borders to foreigners which I’m 50/50 on. Although I’d like to see the country, they have also recognized Crimea as a part of Russia and not Ukraine. Perhaps only a small matter for me, but larger for others.
